Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is where horses, a licensed mental health therapist and an equine specialist work together with clients to facilitate healing in the context of psychotherapy.
The Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) defines Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) as a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and a horse professional designed to address specific treatment issues presented by a psychotherapy client. This unique method enables clients to learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horses, and then processing (or discussing) feelings, behaviors and patterns.
EAP utilizes this relationship with the horse as a way to reflect client's experiences and facilitate change. Therapeutic results begin immediately, and it can be used with a variety of populations such as children, teens, adults and groups. EAP can be used in counseling with individuals and families.
It has been used in a variety of settings with diverse populations, producing impressive results, EAP has shown good results with ADHD, phobias, eating disorders, abuse issues, depression, anxiety, PTSD, addictions, relation problems, communication issues and so much more.
Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is an experiential learning approach with horses which promotes the development of life skills. The focus on life skills can be used for personal growth, to reengage students in academic learning, to provide protective factors for at risk children and teens and exploration of professional pursuits like team building, leadership development and productivity increase.
Typically, the clients participate in activity with the horses on the ground and a trained facilitator guides the learning process. Sessions are facilitated by a professional who has training and certifications that qualifies them to work safely with horses, have knowledge and skill in experiential learning methods and have been trained in facilitation.
Equine assisted learning is typically offered to individuals and groups and sessions are always on the ground in the EAGALA model..
The Natural Lifemanship model is also integral in all the therapy and learning. sessions.
THE BIG PICTURE
When someone experiences an emotional or mental health problem, it can affect every person in a family or group and is often difficult for them too. People may see the problem in different ways and this can be confusing. systemic therapy can help people see things differently and do things to make everyone feel happier and get on better. For Families We offer systemic family therapy to work respectfully and effectively with people in ways that consider their important relationships, and the different systems and contexts in which they live.
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing; this treatment targets the emotions, images, sensations and cognitive beliefs that typically result from having experienced trauma. EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that has been shown to be effective in resolving trauma, and has been thoroughly studied in treating PTSD. The basic definition of trauma is an experience that overwhelms your ability to cope and changes how your nervous system responds when you are stressed. EMDR, with or without horses, helps to reset the nervous system so that it is more balanced. This allows you to choose your responses to stresses rather than reacting with agitation or shutting down. EMDR helps to restore your ability to return to a more balanced emotional state and to be fully present to yourself, others and the world around you.
